The figure is 210% higher than 2020; until then, the highest value had been recorded in 2011, when the municipality totaled US$ 402 million
Americana reached 2021 a record number of exports. It was US$ 564 million. Until then, the highest value had been registered in 2011, when the municipality totaled US$ 402 million in sales abroad. The figures are from the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services.
The result, an increase of 210% compared to 2020, made the city one of the 100 largest exporters in the country last year and recorded its biggest trade surplus, of US$ 166 million – in the previous year, the balance was negative, of US$ 86 million. Imports in 2021 totaled US$ 398 million, up 48%.

The good performance of the municipality in 2021 was mainly driven by the export of precious metals. “There were considerable investments by multinationals in Americana for the production of vehicle catalytic converters, a product considered highly complex and which is produced using very expensive precious metals”, said economist Paulo Oliveira, from the PUC-Campinas Observatory.

According to the specialist, it is a residue of industrial production that is being exported in very high and increasing quantities, which characterizes it as the main export product in Americana.
To give you an idea, said the economist, from 2020 to 2021, there was a 170% growth in exports of waste and precious metals. Likewise, tire exports also grew, by 28%. And the export of catalysts, for example, grew by 56%.
Oliveira explains that although catalysts are considered complex products, they are not produced anywhere in the world. They are manufactured with specific favorable conditions of knowledge, technology and have high added value. Precious metal residues are considered medium-low complexity products. “It is expected that more complex activities generate dynamism in the generation of employment and good remuneration. While the production of less complex goods is associated with fewer opportunities for economic growth and income generation for the municipality,” he said.
BUYERS. Director of Ciesp (Center for Industries of the State of São Paulo) in Americana, Leandro Zanini highlighted Germany and the United States as the main destinations for products exported by Americana.
“The exchange rate, in this way [with the dollar appreciated against the real], greatly attracts the export movement of the national industry,” said Zanini. He also emphasized the strength of the pneumatic sector in the city and said that other industries, such as chemical products, have been relevant to Americana’s good performance. Like the director of Ciesp, the secretary of Economic Development of the municipality, Rafael de Barros said that the appreciated dollar against the real favors exports.
He also attributes Americana’s good results to city hall investments such as PEIEX (Qualification Program for Exporters), a partnership that offers free consulting to all companies in the municipality that want to export. “All of this at no cost to the city hall and to the entrepreneur”, he pointed out.
